Great Year for the Bodmin and Wenford Railway
With record visitor numbers reported, The Bodmin and Wenford Railway proved last year that there is still a huge passion for experiencing traditional steam train journeys on Cornwall holidays. With the popular heritage line operating three locomotives, hopes are now high that 2012 will be even better.
The railway finished 2011 with its successful ‘Winter Steam-Up’ event. This was an occasion not to be missed for railway enthusiasts with the oldest train featured, the London and South Western Railway Beattie well tank No 30587, built as long ago as 1874. Despite a late panic as a 1950s engine suffered a mechanical failure, the Steam-Up still impressed all who attended and marked an appropriate end to a memorable year.
The Bodmin and Wenford Railway, which runs for six-and-a-half miles, is keen to continue building its reputation as an excellent working replica of a 1950s Cornish branch line. With passenger numbers up by five per cent in 2011, prospects are good for the future of this special attraction.
