Rare duck spotted on Newquay pond

Bird-watchers from around the country have flocked to a duck pond in Newquay in the hope of catching a glimpse of a rare duck usually found in Hawaii.

The Lesser Scaup duck is colloquially known as the Little Bluebill or Broadbill due to its distinctive blue bill and can dive for up to 25 seconds or swim underwater for 15 – 18 metres.

One of the premier spots in Britain for wildlife enthusiasts, the news comes off the back of a series of rare and wonderful sightings along the Cornish coast in recent times.

A Killer Whale mother and its calf were spotted 100 yards off the coast of Padstow in December last year, whilst Cornish bird sightings were the ‘best since the 1960’s’ according to a report by the RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) also released in December.

Be sure to look out for the wonderfully diverse range of wildlife whilst enjoying your Cornwall holidays this year.
