Traditional game returns to St. Columb Major

Cornwall's of St. Column Major is preparing to welcome the return of a tradition dating back hundreds of years. The game of hurling has a rich heritage in the county, with games first recorded in the 12th century.

The game promises immense competition, as more than 50 players make up the town and country teams battling for the title. It begins with the two teams lining up in the market square, each aiming to get the prized hurling ball over the boundary of the parish. The object ball is usually made from Sterling silver, with the motto 'Town and Country- Do your best!' inscribed across the middle, representing the names of the battling teams. The eventual winner is the player who scores the goal, getting to keep the prized hurling ball.

St.Columb Major's match is held on Shrove Tuesday, with another game being held on the second following Saturday. If you happen to be staying in a nearby Cornwall holiday park during the period, why not come along to let the family indulge in some fantastic Cornish tradition.
