Best places to celebrate New Year in Cornwall

Every New Year’s Eve should be special and unforgettable as everyone is looking forward to new beginnings whilst celebrating with family and friends. Deciding on where to go can be difficult and, if like many people, you have not yet planned to go anywhere to celebrate then a New Year’s Eve break in Cornwall is a great option.

From fireworks to a quiet New Year’s Eve dinner in Cornwall, the county has so many different activities that you can do to bring in the New Year and, in this guide, we take you through some of the best places in the Duchy where you can celebrate.

Looe

New Year's Eve in Looe

Looe is an extremely popular destination to celebrate the New Year as normally the pretty seaside town plays host to one of the best New Year’s Eve fireworks events in Cornwall. However, as a result of the coronavirus guidelines, organisers have decided to cancel the fireworks display for this year, but all of the pubs will still be open as normal.

Welcome to Looe told us a bit more about what you can expect to see in the town this year. They said: “Normally, Looe has been one of the top 10 places in the UK to celebrate New Year’s Eve; sadly for 2021, the local authorities & organisations felt it necessary to cancel the firework display.”

Looe is also traditionally home to a massive fancy dress party that fills the streets and bars of the town. This is another reason why Looe is regarded as one of the top destinations in the UK to celebrate New Year’s Eve.

Despite this year’s fireworks display being cancelled, the majority of pubs in Looe will be open to the public until early evening on New Year’s Eve and then will be ticket-only from 7pm. You can find out more information about the pubs and when they are open by clicking here.

If you want to experience the great atmosphere and buzz that will still be evident around the town, then our Looe caravan park is the choice of accommodation for many over the festive period in the build-up to the celebrations.

Polperro

Polperro is usually a pretty, quaint and quiet little coastal village, but when New Year’s Eve arrives it transforms into a hive of activity.

The village usually turns into a giant fancy dress party and Love Polperro says visitors often circulate between the five pubs and the British Legion to wish everyone a happy New Year, but when the clock strikes 12 almost everyone in the village meets at the Big Green in the heart of the village.

The village really does showcase a great party atmosphere and like Looe, this little seaside resort is a fantastic place to see in the New Year.

Lost Gardens of Heligan

On New Year’s Day 2022, The iconic Lost Gardens of Heligan will open its gates to help raise vital funds for a local charity, Children’s Hospice Southwest. Proceeds for the day’s ticketing will be donated to this incredible charity.

The Lost Gardens of Heligan told us a bit more about what you can expect to see during a visit over the New Year period.

“The Lost Gardens of Heligan really is a winter wonderland that is just waiting to be explored and the Woodland Walk and sub-tropical Jungle can be enjoyed by people of all ages.

“For animal-lovers, the gardens welcome a variety of birdlife over the winter period from woodpeckers and wagtails to redwings and black caps.”

The Watering Hole

The Watering Hole is the UK’s only bar on a beach and each year it puts on an event to see in the New Year.

This year is set to be no different as you can celebrate the arrival of 2022 at their Motown Madness New Year’s Eve party. The celebrations will transport you through the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s with the incredible Motown Pirates.

The musical pirates are fronted by a professional singer boasting international experience with chart-topping bands and the band will also feature a fantastic brass section on trumpet and trombone.

Tickets for the event are £35, but this price does include a New Year’s Eve dinner as well.

Truro

The capital of Cornwall, Truro, is another great place to visit on New Year’s Eve as you can experience a great night-time vibe as most bars will be putting on parties and celebrations.

If you’re looking for New Year’s Eve fireworks in Cornwall, then there will be two fireworks displays that you can enjoy on Lemon Quay.

According to Visit Truro, there will be a family display at 7.30pm that will be perfect to let your children join in on the celebrations and during the evening there will be £3 meal vouchers handed out to children which will be exchanged in local eateries on the night. There will also be a midnight fireworks display for adults to see in the New Year.

If you love a bit of shopping, then on New Year’s Day you could browse through the independent and national shops located in the city and grab a bargain in the January sales.

Alternatively, you can enjoy some entertainment at the Hall for Cornwall with shows such as Cinderella taking place, or you can visit the amazing cathedral.

Newquay

Widely recognised for its surfing and its nightlife, it should come as little surprise that Newquay is one of the best places to see in the New Year.

Every year at midnight, the Newquay Town Council puts on a fireworks display at the Newquay Town Harbour, which is spectacular.

After the fireworks, you can join the masses in fancy dress in Newquay’s pubs and clubs and join in all the New Year’s songs.

Central Square in Newquay is another popular destination to count down to midnight but beware it can get very busy.
