Best places to celebrate New Year in Cornwall

Every New Year’s Eve should be special and unforgettable as everyone should be looking forward to new beginnings whilst celebrating with family and friends.

But, if like many people, you have not yet planned to go anywhere for New Year’s then you should read on to find out some of the amazing places in Cornwall where you could celebrate the New Year’s countdown.

Looe

Short-breaks and holidays in Looe over New Year are extremely popular and this year is set to be no different.

According to the Looe Tourist Information Centre there will be a fireworks display on the seafront at 6pm for children and at midnight there is a larger one for the adults.

That’s not all; Looe is also home to a massive fancy dress party that fills the streets and bars of the town, which is probably why it is regarded as one of the best places in the whole of the UK to be on New Year’s Eve.

Mark Camp, Manager of the Looe Tourist Information Centre, adds, “It will be the usual crazy party atmosphere in the town with everybody dressed up, expect many minions this year!”

If that’s not enough entertainment for your holiday, then go and watch the crazy people that are taking part in the RNLI Charity Swim on East Looe beach at 11am on New Year’s Day.

To find out more about the famous New Year’s Day dip then visit the Looe Lifeboat Station website or visit The Famous Looe New Year’s Day Dip Facebook page.

Polperro

Polperro is usually a pretty, quaint and quiet little coastal village, but when New Year’s Eve arrives it transforms into a hive of activity.

The village usually turns into a giant fancy dress party and Love Polperro says visitors often circulate between the five pubs and the British Legion to wish everyone a happy New Year, but when the clock strikes 12 almost everyone in the village meets at the Big Green in the heart of the village.

The village really does showcase a great party atmosphere and like Looe this little seaside resort is a fantastic place to see in the New Year.

Truro

Truro is another great place to visit on New Year’s Eve as you can celebrate the New Year by watching an amazing midnight fireworks display on Lemon Quay.

Cornwall’s capital has a great night-time vibe as most bars will be putting on parties with Visit Truro recommending a number of places to visit.

Zafiros Bar in New Bridge Street, Vertigo, The White Hart, The Old Grammar School and Vanilla are all bars that will be putting on special events, whilst restaurants like Gravy and The Falmouth Bay Seafood Café are great places to eat at on New Year’s Eve.

If you love a bit of shopping then on New Year’s Day you could browse through the independent and national shops located in the city and grab a bargain in the January sales. Little Boutique, Magpie & Fox and The Vore Store are all worth a visit as well as New Look, TK Maxx, Next and Marks & Spencer.

Alternatively, you can enjoy some entertainment at the Hall for Cornwall and visit the amazing cathedral.

The Lost Gardens of Heligan

On New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day 2016, The Lost Gardens of Heligan will open its gates in aid of the Cornwall Air Ambulance, Cornwall Hospice Care, People and Gardens and St Petroc’s society and visitors can enter the gardens for free, although you are encouraged to make a donation to the charities.

The Lost Gardens of Heligan really is a winter wonderland that is just waiting to be explored and the Woodland Walk and sub-tropical Jungle can be enjoyed by people of all ages.

For animal-lovers the gardens welcome a variety of birdlife over the winter period from woodpeckers and wagtails to redwings and black caps.

New Year’s Eve with Johnny Cowling

You can see in the New Year with one of Cornwall’s greatest comedy exports, Johnny Cowling.

At the St Dennis War Memorial Institute and Working Men’s Club there will be a New Year’s Eve with Johnny Cowling event, which is sure to be a great laugh.

Those staying in nearby holiday parks in Cornwall can also enjoy a disco after the comedy show. Last year the event was a complete sell out and tickets are currently on sale for just £8.

Newquay

Widely recognised for its surfing and its nightlife, it should come as little surprise that Newquay is one of the best places to see in the New Year.

Every year at midnight, the Newquay Town Council puts on a fireworks display at the Newquay Town Harbour, which is spectacular.

After the fireworks, you can join the masses in fancy dress in Newquay’s pubs and clubs and join in all the New Year’s songs.

Central Square in Newquay is another popular destination to countdown to midnight, but beware it does get very busy.
